RYA Training Centre
Portchester Sailing Club is an accredited RYA Training Centre, audited annually to ensure we run Youth and Adult courses within the RYA safety parameters and teaching framework. We offer both theory and practical RYA recognised courses for all boating sections of the Club, and can also test for International Certificate of Competence (ICC). The courses are led by DBS checked and "RYA Safe and Fun" trained leaders. Our courses are run and managed through a number of specific operation procedures, these are audited annually by the RYA and updated when necessary. These operating procedures can be viewed here: PSC Operating Procedures v20.pdf.
The club has a nominated welfare officer who has the responsibility for ensuring that the safety of children and vulnerable adults is fully protected when they are involved in club activities. Any concerns can be communicated directly to the Safeguarding officer welfare@portchestersc.org.uk. The RYA Training Centre is managed by the RYA Principal who can be contacted through ryaprincipal@portchestersc.org.uk.
Our in-house courses are only available to our Club members, and are run by our team of volunteer RYA trained instructors. Due to the fact our instructors volunteer, we are able to offer much
discounted course fees to our members compared to commercial training establishments.
On the water we offer Dinghy and Powerboat practical courses. Onshore we offer yacht theory courses as well as practical courses in RYA First Aid, RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance, VHF Marine Radio (SRC) and RYA Safe and Fun.
All courses need a minimum number of candidates to make running the course viable. We have a full list of the courses that we can run in the calendar. These are labelled as "Expression of Interest".
For each of these courses labelled "Expression of Interest" Members can book a ticket, now, to show that they would like to be offered a place on the next course. These "Expression of Interest" are all grouped together, the dates shown are NOT course dates, they are simply placeholders to allow the details to be easily located.
When there are enough candidates for a course, the training section will look to organise the course based on available resources and liaise with the candidates involved. The list of available courses can be seen by logging into the members area, going to "Events" and selecting the group
or follow this link.
All currently available courses are listed on the club calendar displayed on the dates that the course is taking place. To view these select the group

We are always ready to welcome any club member who already has Instructor qualifications either as a member of the Team or for more 'casual' assistance with training, or indeed assist in the training of any member keen to become an instructor. Parents and volunteers to help with the preparation of boats and safety cover on the water are also very welcome.
